Thomas Haemmerli interview to Jesus Leon. Zurich-Mexico City, 2018 (fragment).
TH: Who are your favorite photographers, and how they influenced your work ?
JL: Although my work is documentary, I recreate a reality. I like to create my own personal reality. That is why I like Man Ray, probably the first photographer I really ever knew. Also I like Weegee because of the chaotic and dark scenes of New-York in the thirties. The atmosphere takes me back to today’s Mexico City. Lots of violence in every respect…
TH. Mexico has this tradition of the Nota Roja papers and magazines depicting directly shot of extremely violent photographs…
JL: Right. Enrique Metinides, a friend of mine, is one of my favorites for the same reasons I like Weegee. As a child I loved fashion magazines. But living in Mexico the Nota Roja was present as well. I guess that is why I seek to create a mixture of both… I like the perverse aspect of this combination, the sinister mood, and I feel that it adequately captures in this city. Or at least the circles I move among. And with the dark side of my work I reflect it like a Film Noir…
TH: Did you receive training as a photographer?
JL: Visual training, yes. What I know I learned through books, autodidactically. I love the history of photography, I love looking at pictures. But I’m not interested in technology, I’m not interested in fancy equipment. When people ask me what lenses I’m using I can’t answer the question. I might learn someday. My equipment is eight years old. I’m interested in taking a good picture, even with an iPhone. And I’m not really interested in technical aspects of photography. I’m not interested in dark rooms or lenses. I know what to do with my light and how to compose a picture. And I know my camera really well.
TH: Very often you don’t look through the viewfinder when you take pictures. You just raise your arm. Do you simply take myriads of pictures and then select the good ones? Or do you know exactly how they will emerge ?
JL: It is a combination of both. I don’t like to look through the camera all the time. I have a huge archive, which I revisit at times. Sometimes a picture I didn’t like becomes interesting years later. So I never delete anything. There are no rules, sometimes I turn the camera like the one that I use, the effect can be intimidating. It’s helpful not to be hidden behind the camera.
