Tyler Goldflower (NYC, lives and works between Mexico City & NYC). Trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Goldflower has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Art Basel Miami, and Mexico. A multidisciplinary sculptural photographic artist, her work creates modern archetypal portraits and tableaus immersing viewers in a liminal realm somewhere between fantasy and physical reality. Her compositions are reminiscent of the artistic movement called Mexicanidad, developed by the muralists Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros, with presence of rough brushstrokes and textures echoing mud, and clay. Her models recall the mestizo identities in compositions with traces of the masters of Mexican photography, migrants like herself, such as the Italian Tina Modotti, Edward Weston from the United Estates and Guillermo Kahlo from Germany.Tipographies of Time, Tyler explores, on the one hand, the oldest techniques for capturing a photograph, such as pigment transfer reminiscent of the heliogravure crafting brought by the Spanish to America during the Virreinato, developing an elaborate contemporary technique with which he manages to print on Mexican clay and travertine marble.
With a timeless aesthetic and a high-quality technique, her work unabashedly aspires to beauty and relates to her own Sephardic identity in which she finds a resonance with the Mesoamerican world in its rites, traditions and contemporary spirituality.
