Fabiola Menchelli

Mexico City, 1983.
Lives and works in Mexico City.

Fabiola Menchelli’s work seeks to explore essential ideas about photography. Using light as the raw material, her creation process questions the materiality of the image in order to explore photography as a poetic space.

Menchelli graduated from Massachusetts College of Art with an MFA in ‘Visual Arts and Photography’ and holds a BA in Arts from Victoria University in Melbourne. She has participated in national and international art exhibitions and juried shows including in México, USA, Canada, the UK, Sweden, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

She has been invited to artist residences including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and Casa Wabi. She’s been awarded several honours including the FONCA ‘Young Creators Grant’, the Fulbright – García Robles Fellowship the FONCA – CONACYT grant for studying abroad and the MassArt ‘Dean’s Award’ for Fulbright scholars. In 2014 she was awarded the ‘Acquisition Prize’ for the XVI National Biennale of Photography from the Centro de la Imagen México.  

 

Available works:

Light Studies (2016) are images are created inside of the camera by doing multiple exposures of planes of colour, using light as the raw material. The creative process explores ideas about the essence of photography and its relation to painting as poetic space.
