Sakiko Nomura

Japan, 1967.
Lives and works in Tokyo.

Sakiko Nomura graduated from Kyushu Sangyo University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Photography and Imaging Arts, and became Nobuyoshi Araki’s disciple in 1991. Following her first solo exhibition Clock Without Hand in 1993, she participated in exhibitions in European and Asian institutions, such as the Kunstmuseum Bochum, the Miyanomori Art Museum, Sapporo, Hokkaido, the Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, Kumamoto, and the festival Les Rencontres d'Arles, Arles.

While there are elements of Nobuyoshi Araki’s teaching in her work, fundamentally she approaches the nude in a wholly different, more tender way. Nomura's set ups are simple, a man in a room shot in low lighting, and it is this simplicity that makes the inner fragilities of her portraits so apparent.

After winning the New Figure Encouragement Prize at Photo City Sagamihara 2013, she is currently one of Japans most watched photographers. Her photo books include Naked Time, 1997, Time of Love, 2000, Black Cat, 2002, Night Flight, 2008, Black Darkness, 2008 and Nude / A Room / Flowers, 2012.
